I read an extraordinary post about slack yesterday. https://thezvi.wordpress.com/2017/09/30/slack/
This goes so against everything that is hard coded in me. I never have realised how much value slack adds. And how bad a proposition it is to not have it built in our daily lives.
And just today, a friend of ours was home for lunch who epitomised the value of slack in one’s life. He lives an interesting, introspective, self-defined, deliberate kind life. By spending one part of his time working to make decent money, one part of it working on things he wants to and leaving the rest as slack. From what I can make out, he seems fully alive, is constantly learning, travels, bikes, runs and seems to be attached to his family.
To me, he manifested so well that intriguing notion of a person being his past, present and future at the same moment. Found it remarkable how he is living every moment while keeping a firm eye on the future and never disowning the past. No fragmentation. No deferred wishes. Own trip. Single. Strong family connection.
He is able to do it because he has designed his life with so much slack in it. Has never worked full time. Has moved from here to there bravely. Had grabbed things as they have floated past and at least now, is very clear about his priorities.
Crucial life lesson there.
